COVID-19 has put the brakes on international and even interstate travel in Australia, making life frustrating for individuals and families looking to get away for a holiday.

The Victorian Government has made a significant investment in creating new campsites and facilities across the state to allow residents to scratch their holiday itch and improve the Victorian economy.

Victoria's Great Outdoors has invested $44.6 million into new and upgraded campgrounds across the state so that people have more opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy nature while saving money on their holiday budget.

The new campsites offer a range of facilities for both tents or camper trailer sites, including toilets, showers, picnic tables, BBQs and other amenities like fire pits and playgrounds.

Each site will vary depending on location, but all are set in beautiful natural surroundings close to local attractions or wineries or national parks.

The latest round of Victoria's Great Outdoors funding boosts existing upgrades

The $44.6 million round of funding to upgrade campsites is part of the Victorian Government's $105.6 million investment in March 2021. Some of the major projects included in that round of upgrades included:

  • $19.6 million to build the new Yallock-Bulluk Marine Park
  • $10.5 million to include 4WD tracks across the state
  • $7.1 million in camping and caravan grants
  • $12 million to slash camping fees in half and entice more people to camp across Victoria

Campground investment means new spaces where you can camp and explore

Not only has the Great Outdoors funding been used to update existing facilities, but it has also been used to build brand new sites across the state.

That means there is more scope for fun and exploration while adding new options for seasoned campers. Some of the new and improved sites that have already been completed include:

Blue Pool and Freestone Creek camping precinct

Blue Pool is an improved camping precinct that offers campsites at Blue Pool along Freestone Creek near Maffra in Gippsland, Victoria.

There are new facilities including new picnic tables, barbecues and signage so that people of all ages will enjoy their stay here.

You'll find yourself surrounded by natural beauty, with views of the stunning Freestone Creek valley and an abundance of wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies and birds.

Big Billy accessible viewing platform

The Big Billy Bore Camping Area is a popular site for camping, fishing and other outdoor activities. However, the area has limited phone coverage due to its remote location.

The new accessible viewing platform will improve safety through better phone coverage and provide elevated views of the surrounding area.

Stockman's Campground

Stockman's Campground is a new camping spot 30 kilometres south of the popular Big Billy Bore Campground.

The campgrounds offer everything from beginner to advanced 4WD tracks and bays for your car, tables, barbecues, toilet facilities and picnic shelters, as well as bore water nearby for washing or firefighting needs.

Thompson Bridge Campground

A new campground has been added to the Thomson River Canoe Experience south of town - at Thompson's Bridge.

The $110,000 project was completed in December 2020 and includes a scenic new campsite with five sites and many other amenities, including a picnic shelter, toilet and fire pits.

Numerous other campground projects have been slated along the Thomson River to create new opportunities for camping soon.

The Great Outdoor project also includes many different new sites and amenities. You can discover the full list of completed and upcoming projects at the Victoria's Great Outdoors website and plan your next holiday today.
