The GMCC put up a Facebook post on October 17, asking for suggestions from the community as to what the name of the new track should be.
After that post received nearly 50 comments, and nearly 20 on Instagram, the club has narrowed it down to two finalists: High View MX or High Side MX.
The club's follow-up announcement to Facebook, in which it released the finalists and asked for the community to vote on their favourite, has since received nearly 200 comments on all social media. The deadline on the poll is December 1, at which point the GMCC will tally the votes and decide on a name.
Club president, Richard Toparis, explained that they chose to open the naming of the track to the community to stir engagement and give its members and local motocross fans a sense of contribution to the project.
"It just creates a bit of public interest and makes people feel like they've participated," Toparis said.
While he is not surprised that it has received such an enormous level of attention, Toparis was taken aback by the extent of the poll's reach.
"What does surprise us is the area we're reaching," he said.
"People are commenting from way up north, like Newcastle. It just goes to show how central we are, for people to be looking at our page and wanting to contribute, we feel they're going to be participating in ride days and events like that."
While the naming of one of the club's tracks might seem like a straightforward event, it is an important moment for the club as it signifies the impending completion of a project which has been nearly a decade in the making.
With three days left until the GMCC will make its decision, the vote could still go either way.
Due to the colloquial meaning of the term 'highside' in racing, which refers to a type of crash in which the rider is thrown off the bike, High Side MX seems the less likely of the two options.
"While one [High View MX] makes reference to the actual view of the track, the other has got a double reference," Toparis said.
"It implies that you're crashing the motorbike, and some people are saying 'You don't want make reference to a place where you crash your motorbike', but the other meaning is that it's the high side of the hill."
