There is a major gap in birth education locally and practictioner Taylor Hewitt is running classes to provide women with tools, support, knowledge and confidence around pregnancy, labour and birth.
Ms Hewitt told The Post about the course she offered.
What is hypnobirthing and what are the benefits?
Despite what the name suggests, it's not all about hypnosis.
Hypnobirthing is birth education covering important topics that will not be covered at hospital classes. The positive birth program gives you the knowledge, confidence and tools for a calm and positive birth. The "hypno" part is integrating hypnosis techniques like breathing, deep relaxation and fear release practices.
Why did you decide to become a practitioner?
Having experienced an emergency C-section for the birth of my first son and then a heavily medicated, uninformed vaginal birth after caesarean for my second, I felt like something within me was missing when it came to my birthing experiences.
My husband and I attended a Hypnobirthing Australia course and went on to experience a beautiful, positive and healing birth with our third son. That's when the fire in my belly was set alight.
This course changed my outlook on birth and I know that with the education, experience and passion I have, I can provide support and education to help prepare women and their birth partners for a positive birth.

What do you want to gain out of this venture?
My goal is for women and their birth partners to leave my class feeling confident, informed and excited to give birth.
The saying "as long as the baby is healthy, that's all that matters" does not sit well with me.
Mothers need to walk away from birth feeling empowered and emotionally and physically well too.
My big dream is to be a part of a world where birth is considered safe and positive, not unnecessarily medicalised or traumatic.
What does the course involve?
You would learn about how your brain is wired to birth and the physiology behind birth, tools and techniques to keep you calm and in control, your care giver's role, pain relief options (both medical and non medical), creating a calm and safe birthing environment and letting go of any fears surrounding birth.
You also learn about birthing positions, special circumstances including caesarean birth, inductions, relaxation and surge breathing techniques, how your hormones affect labour, birth preferences, risk and benefits of pain relief options and so much more.
What type of classes do you offer and where are they held?
I offer group classes and private classes.
Group classes are run over two consecutive Sundays per month totalling 12 hours of face-to-face learning and will be run out of The Collective.
Extensive online resources (MP3 tracks, eBook, PDF downloads, practice and birth videos, extra reading materials), morning tea and afternoon tea and support leading up to your birth and the weeks following your birth and a few sneaky gifts from me are included.
Private classes are run from the comfort of the clients' own home.
They can decide if they would like to book in over two consecutive weekend days or four three hour weeknights over the month.
I recommend booking in from 20-32 weeks pregnant as this will allow you plenty of time to practise all of the techniques and prepare you to write an informed birth preference list.
How much does it cost?
Group classes are $495. Private classes are $770 and spots are very limited for these. There is a $150 booking fee to book into the course with the final payment due seven days prior to class. Setting up Afterpay may be an option.
