"He's pretty well known in town," the spokesperson said.
"He has lived here for most of his life and has contributed enormously to stage shows and the Lieder Theatre in particular."
Mr Hancock, who was born in Maitland, said he finds Australia Day quite a challenge in terms of understanding where he fits as an Australian into the whole picture.
"With my work at the Lieder Theatre and working with so many different people, I sometimes find it conflicting given all the different political, social and emotional responses to the day.
"I'm caught up in the emotional principal of what the day means."
Mr Hancock normally spends Australia Day with the Lieder Theatre, but this one will be very different for him.
"I'm not sure what to expect on the day, but it will be a big learning curve for me," he said.
"For many years, I was involved with running the Lieder Youth Theatre which would provide entertainment on the day."
ChrisJohn Hancock will give a speech on the day and will be on stage during the official ceremony.
