The man, who is yet to be identified, is reported to have just taken off from the eastern end of the runway before veering left towards Brisbane Grove Road and crashing.
Reports from local residents indicate that an Utralight or Microlight aircraft had been circling low near the airport from around 6pm but it has not been confirmed if this had been the same pilot or aircraft.
Police and emergency services were called to the accident site at around 8pm on Saturday night. The name of the pilot has not yet been released and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
