Don retired some years ago from his pastoral pursuits to live in Goulburn. He was an active supporter of the AP&H Association and Historical Society and the Goulburn Pipe Band. Don was also the inaugural president of both the Pony Club and Australia Day Rodeo Committee.
Roger came to Taralga from the city and threw himself into life in the village. Any organisation could ask for and receive his support. Roger worked effectively as a Pavilion Steward for the AP&H Association and was the popular secretary of the Garden Club and member of the Bannaby Vestry.
Historical Society meeting
At the meeting of the Historical Society held last week in the Masonic Hall it was reported that many acceptances had already been received for the coming reunion of former Quarry workers. Local residents will be welcome to attend and bring visitors from 1-4pm on Sunday October 6 and see the memorabilia and photos displayed in the Masonic Hall.
Bookings are being taken now for the trip to Tuena which will leave at 9am Saturday November 9. Lunch will be provided in the Tuena Hall and all the churches will be open for visitors. Morning tea will be available at the Limerick Church. The cost for the day will be $25.
It was decided that a Christmas function would take the form of an afternoon tea on Sunday December 1. Residents over 70 years of age will be invited to an afternoon tea. All will be welcomed and it is hoped this will provide a photo opportunity to mark the occasion.
The Society's AGM will be held in February.
Wollongong Carlennium
Wollongong's madcap motoring event, Wollongong Carlennium will arrive in Taralga on Friday November 15, after being led into the village by the Orange Antique Car Club.
Taralga horsemen will meet up with drivers and officials on the outskirts of the village and lead them into the village. The event this year boasts some amazing vehicles including Wollongong's own "Big Baron" a 1962 "Town Pumper" Denis Fire Engine and "Baby Baron" a mini minor with a huge water problem.
The year Australia's Big Brother 2: Peter "Digger" Corbett is travelling with the event in the "Diggermobile" and will be happy to sign autographs on arrival in the village. Digger will be expected about 12.30pm.
The parade into Taralga will be followed by lunch at the Argyle Inn where a presentation will be made on behalf of Wollongong to the people of Taralga. A special presentation will also be made to the Taralga Pony Club.
The Wollongong Life Guards will speak to the local children about beach and water safety and the winners of the Wollongong Carlennium Colouring Competition will be announced.
Wollongong Carlennium is a fund-driving event that suits everybody, with the proceeds benefiting the Shepherd Centre for hearing impaired children. It is also a major effort on behalf of Wollongong to build an important annual event for regional NSW, an event that takes an integrated and local approach to breaking down the barriers between country and city.
Drivers from across the State are encouraged to represent their town by entering cars and being part of the special "pride of town" challenge and celebrations along the way, enjoying the hospitality and camaraderie that develops as a result.
The challenges and competitions run as part of the event are non-profit and run for no other purpose than to promote a feeling of genuine good fellowship and hospitality in country towns visited.
The Shepherd Centre benefits through sponsorship and entry frees when drivers stoop to bribery and corruption to negotiate their way past "dodgy" officials without losing too many points.
Archdiocesan sport
Friday September 13 turned out to be a lucky day for Millie and Ben Marmont when they attended the NSW Catholic School Sports in Canberra.
Ben competed first in his favourite event, the long jump and came 7th from a field of 17. Meanwhile Millie was working her way into the heats of 100m and 200m events. After qualifying for the finals to be run later in the day, Millie managed to come 4th in the long jump.
By three in the afternoon they lined up for the 100m final in which Millie gained a good start and came home third. She then turned around and ran in the 200m and came a very fast second to a young girl who broke the record. Millie is now looking forward to competing in Homebush against children from State and private schools in October.
Congratulations also to Caleb Cummins who came third in the 10 years boys 800m heat in the Archdiocesan Carnival in Canberra recently.
A new release
Glenda Miskelly tells us that the newest offering from Cushendall Vineyard is the recently bottled Chenin Blanc, now available from Honeysuckle Cottage. Paul and Glenda are delighted with the result particularly given the difficult growing season that the vines had to endure. Searing hot winds and the lack of rain around Christmas time meant the vines were greatly stressed and resulted in them shedding leaves. When the rain finally came the days were too cool for optimum ripening. This delayed picking until the end of April. With all these trials, the yield and sugar levels were down on last year and it was a matter of "wait and see" regarding the outcome of the finished wine. It was worth the wait! Chenin Blanc has been planted in much warmer climates than ours wit mixed success, but seems to thrive best and demonstrate its flair in cooler more marginal climates. This year's wine exhibits wonderful passionfruit and green apple skin characters and a crisp acid finish. A lovely refreshing wine to serve with chicken, fish or as a aperitif.
Golf Club future
The Taralga Golf Club would like to invite all members and interested persons to a special meeting at the Sports Club on Friday September 20 at 7.30pm
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the future directions of the Golf Club. As you may be aware the course has been closed to members and guests as of July 1, because of difficulties meeting the insurance costs. Your support at this meeting would be much appreciated.
Taralga AP&H AGM
Don Taylor reminds members and all interested persons that the Taralga AP&H annual general meeting will be held on Sunday September 29, 7.30pm at the Sports Club.
A committee meeting will be held following the AGM. All chief stewards are asked to submit any alterations to their section in the schedule by the night of the meeting.
Work has to start very soon on the schedule for next year's show and with everyone's help it is hoped to have all mistakes in this year's schedule eliminated. Change of entry fees, prizes, updated sponsors and new classes all need to be checked and your help will be appreciated.

Yass garden excursion
An extremely pleasant day favoured the 16 members of the Garden Club who travelled to Yass with Colin Pitt on Saturday. The nursery visit was first instead of the usual last of the day and patrons were pleasantly surprised at the huge range of plants, trees and shrubs on show at Irvines. Good natured Colin found room for all the purchases and then the group went on their way to Crisps Galleries. They were amazed at the varied colours and forms of the intricate pieces as they were shown how each item was carefully and painstakingly formed. A guided tour through the gardens displayed a wonderful vista of newly formed lake and trees with beautiful sculptures by Michael Murphy: the waterfall devised by Peter Crisp to fall as a sheet of glass, the tall stone cairn with water gushing down, the lavender and rosemary gardens with mossy stone walls and the hellebores blooming under the spring blossoms were all subjects that delighted those with their cameras.
Tables set in the garden made the delightful lunch a pleasure as small birds flitted among the bushes. The antique and gift galleries were visited before leaving for the Hewletts garden. Here many rustic items were rescued and preserved in a delightful country garden.
The pine lined ceiling and walls converted to a guest-house and an old slab cottage compete with corrugated iron tank. A post and rail fence and huge old wooden slab walls, pergolas, stools and gates all added to the warm, relaxed character of the garden with its large trees sheltering shrubs and colourful bulbs.
An appetising afternoon tea was provided by the hospitable hosts, Jill and David. It was with reluctance a last look around the garden was taken before the party boarded the bus and travelled down the tree and agapanthus lined drive for the return journey.
Jenny Hewlett has phoned to tell members that the climber with tree petalled flower, that intrigued so may is an Akebia Quintator or Fire heated Akebia, a deciduous climber for part shade.
The raffles were won by Gwen Swan and Betty Biddle.
The November outing will be a visit to Norma Waldron's garden at Bundanoon on Saturday November 2. Norma, the Southern Zone president of the Garden Club invited members to visit her garden after she visited the Taralga Club in May.
The October meeting has not yet been finalised as dates clash with other functions. The options are a bus to Berry Open Gardens on Saturday October 26.
(Clashes with shopping trip to Sydney); Open Gardens in Kangaroo Valley on Saturday October 12 or three Golspie gardens on Thursday October 10? Members are asked to get in touch with Bonnie or Mary as soon as possible with their preference so transport can be arranged.
