About 12.45am this morning a B-double truck travelling north on the Hume Highway left the road and plunged into a deep roadside gully, rolling on to its side and taking out trees and a 10-meter section of guard rail in the process.

The cause of the crash is still unknown and police investigations are continuing. No one else was injured in the crash.

The driver, a 47-year-old man from Glenfield, suffered severe injuries and died at the scene. He was travelling from Albury to Sydney when the accident occurred approximately 15km north of Goulburn.

Wollongong Regional Traffic Coordinator Andrew Palmowski told the Goulburn Post the deep gully between the north and southbound lanes may have saved further lives from being lost.

“As horrible as this is, it’s lucky that it happened where it did. Otherwise he could have gone straight into south bound traffic and it would have been chaos,” he said.

Recovery crews are still in the process of removing the B-double truck from the gully.
