23-year-old Mark Maukau was discovered missing from a minimum security section of Goulburn Correctional Centre during a roll call at 12.30pm today (Friday 3 February 2012).
Police from Goulburn Local Area Command were alerted to Mr Makau’s escape just after 1pm.
Local detectives and specialist forensics officers are continuing their inquiries at the correctional centre.
It’s believed the escapee is responsible for a car-jacking outside a Goulburn laundrette about 12.15pm.
An elderly couple was confronted by a man outside the business on the corner of Bourke and Clifford Streets and threatened with a screwdriver.
The man then stole their grey 2011-model Mazda 3 sedan, with NSW registration CDY-82G.
Police have stepped up patrols of the area in a bid to locate Mr Maukau, who’s described as being of Maori/Pacific Islander appearance, 172cm tall with a medium build.
He was serving a custodial sentence for armed robbery offences.
It’s believed Mr Maukau could be travelling to western Sydney.
Police consider Mr Maukau armed and dangerous and warn he should not be approached.
Anyone who sees Mr Maukau or knows of his current whereabouts is urged to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.
