Over the past 12 months members of the Goulburn Region Woodworkers have been busy making toys for girls and boys.
They also have not forgotten the adults or older children who might otherwise be going without presents this Christmas.
On Wednesday, almost 100 items were handed over to representatives of Anglicare who will spend their time up till Christmas Eve sorting out who will receive the wide array of wood crafted items.
Toni Reay, acting coordinator for housing and social services in Goulburn said that local people would be surprised at the number of families that find themselves without anything, particularly around Christmas.
A person and their children can be forced to walk out of a home leaving everything behind due to serious abuse situations.
Housing is a serious problem for many with whole or part families being unable to obtain government housing and not being in a financial position to seek private rental accommodation.
While they might take a few treasured possessions with them, often the children’s toys are left behind and the parent has no means of purchasing any new ones, even something small.
“We deliberately leave delivering the presents till Christmas Eve and the presents are wrapped with the children’s names on the tags,” Ms Reay said, “we are really like Santa’s helpers.”
She told the woodworkers that the toys would really be appreciated by their recipients and the staff at Anglicare certainly appreciated the support of groups like them as they relied on community support to deliver their services.
