GOULBURN Speedway’s season came to a spectacular close on Saturday night when the state’s finest sprint car drivers took to the track in front of a record crowd for the final of the Series Production Championship.

For the first time in three decades the 410 Sprint Cars made an appearance on the track sending the crowd overboard, according to race sectary Tony Kranitis.

The stock rods and the demolition derby both cemented themselves as crowd pleasers.

Mr Kranitis said the crowd was three times as big as they normally have turn up for the meet.

“There was a fantastic crowd on the night that all stayed from start to finish,” he said.

“We honestly couldn’t have asked for a better turn out or better support from the community.”

When the crowd was asked whether they wanted to see the 410 Sprint Cars return next year Mr Kranitis said they exploded and erupted with excitement.

“We will definitely be doing it again,” Mr Kranitis said.

“The speedway was absolutely chocka- block. We won’t be able to get a final figure until our meeting on Wednesday night but we’re expecting it to be massive.”

Mr Kranitis said he would like to extend his thanks to all the sponsors of the event, in particular the Goulburn Workers Club.

The seven month long Series Production Championship also drew to a close on the night.

Steve Caunt reigned supreme in the sprint cars event, edging out runner-up Jon McCorkindale and the third-placed Rod Bright.

Locals filled two of the positions on the podium in the Super Stock Rods decider.

Peter Croker and Kate Croker occupied first and third places respectively, and sandwiched runner-up Damian McAlister. Brent Croker was too swift in the series production race.

Croker held off a worthy runner-up Darren Snowden, who in-turn finished marginally clear of Michael Rogers The demolition derby, an actionpacked competition filled with highlights, was claimed Paul Beynon.
