Police have urged anyone who sees Christopher Gibbs, 30, not to approach him but to call triple-0 immediately following his escape.
Gibbs was last seen at the minimum security correctional centre on Maud Street at 8.35am on Tuesday, however staff discovered he was missing at the 9.30am muster.
It was unclear how he escaped. The polair helicopter and police dog units have joined the search for Gibbs.
Police said Gibbs had been serving a sentence of seven years and eight months for armed robbery and other robbery offences.
Gibbs, originally from Sydney, was arrested in Nelson Bay in November 2011 after holding up six banks and credit unions near Coffs Harbour in a two-week spree. He was arrested at the time after police chased him through backyards and over roofs.
Gibbs had been in custody for 14 months before he escaped on Tuesday morning.
He is 195 centimetres tall, with a thin build, sandy blond hair and acne scars on his face. He was last seen wearing prison greens.
Police say he has associates in the St Marys area.
Anyone who sees Gibbs has been urged not to approach him but contact police immediately on triple-0.
