Extra officers will be deployed throughout Goulburn’s licensed venues tonight and tomorrow night as part of Operation Unite.
Inspector John Sheehan told the Post there would be a strong emphasis on licensing compliance as well as alcohol fuelled violence and antisocial behaviour.
“If you’re going to drink have a good time but you need to have a Plan B in relation to how you will get home, so you’re not drinking and driving, and obviously no form of violence will be tolerated by the police,” he said.
Inspector Sheehan also warned that potential troublemakers that there would be consequences for their actions.
“If you fail to leave a licensed premises when you’re told to go or if you remain in the vicinity after you’ve been told to go, whether that’s by police or people who work for clubs and pubs you’re looking at a $550 fine,” he said.
“(If you commit any act of) violence at all you will be charged by police and depending on the seriousness of the crime it will depend on whether you go before the court to get bail or if you end up in jail.” Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione also issued a sobering warning about the potential consequences of alcohol fuelled violence, citing a recent study by Monash University that suggested “one-punch” assaults had claimed at least 90 Australian lives since 2000.
“The research by the university’s department of Forensic Medicine claimed alcohol was a factor in almost three-quarters of those fatal assaults,” he said.
