And at six-foot-one, he towered over his students, much like how he towered over the Australian NBL in the 80s and 90s.
But the kids had no idea who he was.
No surprise, considering none were born when his name was often seen on the back of Sydney Kings jerseys.
The budding basketballers who took part in the Sport and Space Expo earlier this week were given a lesson from former NBL and Sydney King superstar Steve Carfino.
The 52-year-old was part of the Basketball NSW team who came down from Sydney to teach some bball skills at the Expo held on Tuesday and Wednesday at Carr Confoy Sports Grounds. “It’s great anytime you come and deal with kids who have this enthusiasm and passion,” the former great told the Post.
“It’s a win-win, we’re not just doing something for the people, we want kids to enjoy basketball too. You know we’re competing with AFL and competing with rugby league, cricket, we have to go out and expose our sport to the masses like this.”
Carfino put the hundreds of school children from around the Goulburn region who took part in the expo through handling drills, footwork drills as well as passing and shooting competitions. “It’s important for the kids in the country to not feel left out,” Carfino said.
“The effort that country kids go through is amazing. The financial burden is generally a bit more, so it’s great to show them some support.”
