The team, made up of girls from year two all the way up to year six, defeated Parkes Public School 2-0 in the PSSA grandfinal held in Narellan on Tuesday. Such was the occasion that match updates were broadcast live to the school via the PA system.
“We had the whole school give them three cheers and their celebrations after the win was broadcast over the PA,” a proud Wollondilly principal Susan Bradley told the Post.
The team had begun their campaign earlier in the year through a series of district qualifiers.
They’ve beat out 78 other NSW teams to get the top prize.
For coach Naomi Jones, the achievement was made even more special with trio of daughters Caitlin, Mikayla and Grace all in the winning side.
Grace, the youngest in the side, even scored a goal in the final.
“It was a really wonderful experience to have them all there because it won’t happen again. Caitlin is in year six so this was her final year,” Jones said.
But the entire teams’ sporting prowess could mean a standout year for Wollondilly sport.
Sisters Meg and Emma Baxter, along with Mikaylah John, Chloe Brown, Meg Woodberry and Caitlin Jones are also in the girl’s touch team who have also made the final knockouts, to be played in Bega next Monday.
Makayla and Caitlin Jones, Emma Baxter, Chloe Brown and Meg Woodberry are also in the girl’s cricket team who continue their PSSA finals run in the Riverina come term four.
“We like to keep a balance between the academics and the sport, because for some kids that’s their forte, that’s their strengths,” Bradley said.
