In fact, the winner of last year’s competition was a junior who wrangled in a 52cm trout from the alpine waters.
“It’s a family event, and it always has been since day one,” organiser Josh Lambert said.
“We aim to bring awareness to family fishing. It’s also a good opportunity for the kids to get out there, have a fish, it’s just great.”
Organisers hope as many of the 300 competitors who took part in last year’s trout classic will again don their rods for a day on the water.
“People don’t realise the water ways we have that are usable for the public and the fact that we do have great waterways in our backyard,” Lambert said.
“Bank fishing, canoes, kayaks, rubber boats, paddle boats, you name it we’ll have nearly all of them there.” The competition will use a catch, measure then release system and entries will only be considered for Trouts, despite other fish known to be in the waters.
Entry into the competition is $30 with juniors aged under 12 $5 which also includes a rod and reel.
A fishing licence will be required, but one day licences will be available on the day for competitions between 6am and 3.30pm.
“Fishing was a bit slow last year but the area has been stocked so there should be plenty of fish for the catching,” organiser Andrew Banfield told the Post.
Banfield says the winner will receive a $500 fishing trip.
“Fishing is a funny sport. That’s why they call it fishing and not catching,” Banfield said.
“You could catch 30 or 50 fish or you could only catch one. But you only need to catch one fish to be in with a shot of winning.”
Competition begins from 6am and runs through to 3.30pm at Pejar Dam on Crookwell Road.
