Local agents LJ Hooker will auction the former Mulwaree Shire Council chambers in Montague St on November 28.
It is being pitched as a “unique commercial opportunity” with two reception areas, waiting room, nine offices and a board room. The two-storey building is zoned B3 commercial and has a total area of 870 square metres.
Council general manager Warwick Bennett suggested the sale after discovering thousands of dollars would be needed to upgrade the building to make it suitable for lease.
Community Plus had expressed interest in renting the premises for education programs.
“We had huge success with selling the South Goulburn Caravan Park so we’re hoping for a similar outcome with the building,” Mr Bennett said.
The caravan park, sold to Mt Hutton based PRE Landholdings in July, fetched $956,000, some $200,000 above expectation.
An earlier report to Council estimated the former chambers would sell for about $850,000. Under the terms of the 2004 amalgamation agreement, Upper Lachlan Shire Council is entitled to 24.22 per cent of proceeds.
Mr Bennett said Council had fielded less than five local enquiries about the former chambers, including from real estate agents and legal firms.
The council selected LJ Hooker to undertake the auction from an expression of interest process which attracted six submissions.
The auction will be held at 2pm at the Goulburn Soldiers Club on Thursday, November 28.
Meantime, Council efforts to buy the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium on the corner of Verner and Bourke Streets are still going through the motions.
Mr Bennett said he had written to owners, the Illawarra Institute of TAFE, expressing interest in purchase but he had not received a reply.
Councillors supported the move to establish a performing arts venue in the building and to give the Regional Conservatorium security of tenure. A fit-out alone is estimated to cost $1.2m to $1.5m.
