Since the beginning of last week a whole block of the mainstretch has been ground away, ripped up and prepped for phase one of the Goulburn Mulwaree Council CBD Beautification scheme.
Coordinator of Engineering Services Rob Hughes told the Post the excavation was in preparation for laying a pattern of stone and clay pavers.
He predicts the paving work, weather permitting, will start tomorrow evening.
From the corner of Supercheap Auto through to the front of the Goulburn Post, staff and pedestrians have been walking on make-shift plank bridges, astro-turf and a barrier walkway until the work is complete.
“Weather permitting we will be laying stone and clay pavers, and working at night so we don’t disrupt the businesses and minimise the impact,” Mr Hughes said.
The work should take between seven and 10 days to complete.
It’s not the only area of the CBD under construction.
Tucked in away behind the main street, extensive work is being completed on the Cartwright Place carpark – towards the Montague St end.
“The toilet block that was there was approved to be removed a little while ago and we are now utilising that space in putting in an additional 14 car parks,” Mr Hughes said.
The Cartwright Place project will prove to be a handy offset, providing 14 additional car parks following the loss of four due to the beautification process.
The four car parks between Clifford St and Montague Street have been replaced with street trees
