Detectives are tight-lipped on the investigation, following the explosion at a Dixon St home at 8.30am.
But they revealed they seized postal boxes of fireworks imported from Thailand in a subsequent search of a View St home.
Police said the 13-year-old bought the firework from a friend.
He lit the firework and suffered severe injuries to his left hand after it went off.
The boy underwent surgery to the top of his index finger on Friday at Westmead Children’s Hospital where he was airlifted, followed by another operation on Saturday.
His thumb was also severely damaged.
A family member, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted the Post to say the teenager had not lost any digits, as police reported.
Senior Constable Glenn Cassidy said the boy was in a stable condition but would remain in hospital for about two weeks.
He told the Post police had not laid any charges over the fireworks’ possession at this stage but expected to in future. The boy’s parents were at work at the time of the accident but his siblings were in the house.
Detective Acting Inspector Matt Woods urged anyone offered illegal fireworks to report the matter to authorities.
