The next day, the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs earned a spot in the Raiders Cup rugby league grand final.
Both teams will now have a week off to recover, refocus and prepare for the season’s prize game.
However, In both codes there was criticism from within of the way they achieved their wins.
Swans’ coach Heath Russell said his side was a little flat and lacked the teamwork they had displayed in previous games against Cootamundra.
The 72-70 point win gives the Swans a week off to recuperate from their bruises and ready themselves for the grand final at Gungahlin Enclosed Field on Saturday September 5, starting at 3.30pm.
Bulldogs President Joe Stephens said that Goulburn team made too many errors in the first half and turned over the ball through basic errors.
The Bulldogs were playing minor premiers Queanbeyan, who they soundly defeated a few weeks ago at the Workers Arena.
This time they were on the Blues’ home turf of Seiffert Oval, and it would be a different equation.
In the first half, Goulburn had the wind in their favour, along with the downhill run.
“But they could not capitalise,” Stephens said.
“They showed poor discipline and coughed up the ball right when they were in a position to capitalise.
“At halftime we were down 18-6.
“After a talking to by Mick Picker and others at the halftime break, the boys came out like they meant business.”
Running uphill and into the wind they piled on 22 unanswered points in the second half to win the game 28- 18.
The scoring run started with veteran prop Mick Dodson crossing the line right under the post.
Next was Joe Picker, who found a gap in the Blues’ defence and skipped through to draw the scores level.
Then hooker Ben Picker put the Bulldogs ahead and centre Ben Marmont extended the advantage.
Matt Worboys was the first to get the Dogs on the board in the opening half, while Ben Picker also kicked four goals.
Stephens said the week off will give the Bulldogs an opportunity to work on their discipline and prepare for the tough encounter at Seiffert Oval Queanbeyan on Sunday, September 6.
Kick off at 3pm.
Both Goulburn sides are looking for plenty of local supporters to make the trip down the road to watch the games and provide them with vocal support for their grand final clashes, as they can be sure that whoever their opponents are, they will have plenty of supporters to back them too.
