The contests start at 9am, with the Under 11 grand final between Ajax White and Taralga Black and working through to the blue ribbon event at 3.50pm, when North Blues take on Fireflys in the First Grade men’s decider.

Before that at 2.20pm is the First Grade women’s grand final between Drifters and Crookwell, which promises to be an entertaining and closely fought battle for the silverware.

Hockey has been a keenly contested sport in Goulburn for many decades and past grand finals have been gala events attracting large crowds.

This year should be no exception, particularly with the standard of play in the higher grades lifted by the Association’s participation in the ACT Capital League.

Both the men’s and women’s club teams in the grand finals have players who participate at this and higher representative competition level.

In the Men’s First Grade clash both the goalkeepers, Jason Brayshaw for North Blues and Shaun Anable for Fireflys, are members of the Goulburn Capital League side, Geckos.

These two are recognised as Goulburn’s best and will be putting their bodies on the line to thwart numerous shots at goal that are likely to occur during the game, some at very close range.

Fireflys’ attack will be fronted by Aaron Kershaw, Steve Downey and Todd Devlin.

For the Blues, captain Robbie Hughes will be leading the attack with Anthony Anable and Kookaburra Glenn Turner.

Fireflys go into the grand final as front runners with Kurt Devlin also a factor in the team’s ability to turn defence into attack at the flick of a stick.

The Fireflys have the ability to attack from any point on the field and have a strong blend of youth and experience.

They are regarded as masters of the grand final and are well drilled in their teamwork. 

Their never give up attitude means they will be constantly pressuring the from the initial hit off to the final siren and if the game goes into extra time they will be still running hard.

North Blues are possibly the younger of the teams, but they have been hitting their straps toward the end of the season, buoyed by the return of Turner following surgery.

They are an enthusiastic team and are keen to snatch the silverware from the grips of the red army.

This game is expected to be played at a very fast pace with plenty of end to end action and physical contact.

Keeping the game flowing will be two experienced visiting umpires specially brought in to ensure neutrality and fair play.

The First Grade Women’s game should be equally spectacular, with the women’s quality of play boosted by their exposure to the Capital League season.

Drifters are a well drilled unit and Crookwell is the home of several state and national league players.

In the other grades, both men and women’s as well as juniors, there is a mix of current and former representative players, along with future prospects for region, state and national caps.
