Pedestrian bollards and fences have been erected outside the work on the footpath in this block, creating a labyrinth for pedestrians to pass through as they try to access some of the city’s busiest buildings - the Post Office, McDermott Centre and State Office block.
Goulburn Mulwaree general manager Warwick Bennett said Council was completing the project as soon as possible.
“We are completing the work as quickly as we can and we aim to have the whole block completed within five to six weeks,” Mr Bennett said.
“This will be the last piece of work on the main street before Christmas. In the meantime, we are attempting to cause the least disruption possible.”
Mr Bennett said the next lot of work would start early in the new year on the western side of Auburn street in the Clifford to Montague Streets block.
He said Council had not directly received any negative feedback about the ongoing work.
In a report to the September 15 Council meeting, operations director Matt O’Rourke said along with replacing the footpath with pavers, staff have been preparing garden beds and new bins.
Three new bin receptacles have been installed on the western side of this section, allowing for users to separate recyclables from putrescible waste.
A garden is also being planted at the Verner St corner containing attractive plants such as Astellia, Columbine and Horny Goat Weed.
The report states that new trees will be planted on the western side of Auburn St in the block between Montague and Verner streets in October. Two of these trees will replace those removed at the mid-block crossing.
“Three car parking spaces will be lost in this section as a result of the new trees,” the report stated.
A plan of the proposed layout was delivered to businesses and store owners for review and comment.
