The ACT and District Premier Teams Championships will see 34 club teams from the ACT and region, representing their district associations, playing in seven divisions in the Senior and Intermediates’ classifications.
The Goulburn Netball Association will send its best teams to the championships for the first time, making the trip down the Federal Highway to showcase the Goulburn Mulwaree Shire’s netball talent.
The event has also attracted the support of the Tuggeranong Vikings club group, confirming its status as one of the ACT’s major sponsors of women’s sport in Canberra and region.
The day-long tournament will be held at the Tuggeranong Netball Centre, Calwell, beginning at 8:30 am through to the completion of the day at 4pm.
“We are delighted to be again hosting the Premier Teams’ championship for the second year – the inaugural championships last year demonstrated that playing for your club, which has won its district, will see top-level netball on show,” the president of Tuggeranong Netball, Louise Bilston, said.
“Last year Queanbeyan demonstrated the quality of its club competition with the Waratah Club winning the Seniors division – they will be very keen to win a second consecutive title.
“Tuggeranong’s Rebels Club will also be hoping to retain its Intermediates Division One title with a very strong team studded with ACT and Tuggeranong representative players.
“North Canberra clubs also showed last year why the Belconnen and Canberra Netball Associations have such good representative teams by winning their way through to five out of seven grand finals – they’ll be back, determined to win more finals.
“We are also very excited and grateful for the support of Vikings - by supporting this tournament, they are showing that women’s sport, especially netball, is integral to the services and contribution the Vikings club make to the Tuggeranong community.
“The teams competing on Sunday have qualified for the championships by either winning or being the runner-up in their respective district grade competitions:
The North Canberra netball competition (Belconnen and Canberra Netball Associations, covering Belconnen, North Canberra and Gungahlin), South Canberra Netball Association (covering Woden Valley and South Canberra), Arawang Netball Association (covering Weston Creek and Molonglo), Tuggeranong Netball Association Queanbeyan Netball Association, and Goulburn Netball Association.
Each team will play in a roundrobin format against the other clubs who won or were runner-up in that division at district level.
At the completion of the round robin, the top two teams from each division will play in a grand final for the title of ACT and Districts Premier team champion.
