The NSW Women's Indoor Masters Championship at the Veolia Arena is just the beginning of the council's sports tourism push.
It will be followed by the men's event the following weekend and a celebrity Masters 20/20 Cricket match in March.
Council's marketing, events and culture business manager, Sarah Ruberto said the opportunities were endless.
"Our partnership with Sports Marketing Australia is indicating there are opportunities out there for a wide variety of events," she said.
"We have a big advantage with our location because Goulburn is so easy to access."
Sports Marketing Australia (SMA) approached the council about securing further events after learning it was tendering for both the women's and men's hockey masters over the next two weekends.
Mrs Ruberto said it was something of a feather in Goulburn Mulwaree's cap as SMA only dealt with 40 councils in NSW.
The organisation is undertaking a 'capacity and capability' study of the city's sporting facilities, roads and infrastructure to see what's possible.
"That report will come back to us, enabling Council to pigeon hole events and plan for infrastructure in future budgets," Mrs Ruberto said.
The organisation will visit the city from February 23 to 26, conducting workshops with local sporting associations to identify their capacity to host major regional, state and national events.
SMA has already suggested Goulburn could host three Mountain Bike Australia events over three years. But with Mount Gray not yet up to par, it is facilitating an onsite meeting between Goulburn Cycle Club and Mountain Bike Australia to discuss improvements.
In another twist, the Calisthenics NSW State Championships are also on the agenda.
Mrs Ruberto said current facilities were not up to scratch to meet very specific lighting and staging requirements.
"It can't happen this year but SMA knows the performing arts facility is on the agenda and are flagging us for future years," she said.
The Basketball NSW Southern Junior League and the Gymnastics NSW Country Championships are also in the wind. The council is awaiting further information on hosting requirements for both.
On March 10, at least four former Australian cricket players will arrive in Goulburn for a 20/20 cricket match at Seiffert Oval the following day. The ‘Legends of Australian Cricket’ will take on a local team in a game expected to draw 1500 people.
In November, the Goulburn Golf Club will host the country golf championships.
The council is underwriting and waiving fees for several upcoming events, including $54,500 for the Veolia Arena over the next two weekends.
Forty women’s teams from all over the state are competing in the Women’s Hockey masters this weekend.
It will draw 480 players and officials and, with spectators included, a total 1200 people to Goulburn.
As of yesterday, 11 of the city’s 13 motels were booked out, Mrs Ruberto said.
The Veolia Arena has been adapted for the purpose.
The following weekend, 18 teams are converging for the NSW Men’s Hockey Masters at the same venue.
Together, and based on a SMA formula, the events are expected to generate $1.3 million for the local economy, Mrs Ruberto says.
She paid tribute to the Goulburn Hockey Association, which she said was instrumental in securing the tournaments. The Association started up its own indoor competition late last year and has ploughed money into nets, boards and line marking to be used for the weekend events.
Mayor Geoff Kettle said he and the council supported the sports tourism push.
“Our location is perfect and now that we’re getting our venues right, we’ll push for more,” he said.
“It is all positive investment for the city. If we have to spend a few thousand dollars to generate a $1 million, then we’ll do it.”
