Local dogs and their owners think the city is pooch paradise.
There are already two separate off-leash dog parks for them to have a walk and a play in - and now a new dog park has opened in Bradfordville.
The new off leash dog area in Jack White Park - was completed in June.
Goulburn Mulwaree operations director Matt O’Rourke said the council planned to install a new dog park each year in the city.
“Other options being considered for future parks include Leggett Park and Garfield Park, with the next one to go in in December this year. There is definitely a need for them - there are a lot of dogs and dog owners in town," Mr O'rourke said.
“Dogs greatly benefit from the chance to run free and under the Companion Animals Act of 1998, each council must provide at least one off-leash dog area where the dogs can be exercised.”
The new dog park in Bradfordville complements those already installed at Eastgrove and Victoria Park.
Dog owner Natalie Jeffery welcomed the new dog parks, saying they are a great amenity for the city’s dog owners.
“It’s great that the new dog park has gone into Bradfordville, because we had a lot of residents from out that way coming into Victoria Park,” she said.
“I have spoken to people who come from Bradfordville and they say they will still come into Victoria Park because both humans and animals have struck up friendships here. They tell me they will do a mixture of both - use their local park and then travel into Victoria Park.”
Ms Jeffery said it got busy at the Victoria Park off-leash area at about 9.30am and again after school.
“There tends to be smaller dogs in the morning and bigger dogs in the afternoon,” she said.
“I absolutely adore dog parks and I feel they provide a fantastic opportunity for socialisation. It comes down to responsible dog ownership too, because some people’s dogs don’t always want to be sociable."
RSPCA Goulburn Branch secretary Marilyn Manfred said the proliferation of dog parks in the city was a great thing for residents.
“There are a lot of dogs in Goulburn and a lot of elderly people particularly use the dog parks with their dogs,” Mrs Manfred said.
“One elderly woman was getting a taxi from Bradfordville to come to the Victoria Park, so the new park there will be a great asset for her.”
Mrs Manfred said The RSPCA Goulburn Branch had written to the council suggesting the creation of more dog parks.
“I’m glad to see they have taken us up on it,” she said.
Cr Andrew Banfield has also suggested the creation of special ‘dog playgrounds’ within the off-leash dog parks.
He told a recent council meeting that he saw them while he was on holiday in the Northern Territory and came across a dog park which had some equipment in it for dogs to climb up on and jump over.
"It could be a 44 gallon drum or scrap concrete," he said.
Mr O'Rourke said he would look into the suggestion.
