After eight years as deputy mayor, Cr Kirk was elected as mayor during the first meeting of Goulburn Mulwaree’s new council on October 4.
He was the only councillor to nominate for the position.
“My objective is to serve the community well,” Cr Kirk said. “I have great pride in leading Goulburn into the future.”
He referred to the past four years of council as a “planning phase” and signified a new future of action.
“We’re in the next stage of growth for Goulburn. Many of those projects and plans are underway and we’re here to deliver,” he said.
Cr Alfie Walker was elected as deputy mayor from a selection of nominations including Cr Margaret O’Neill and new candidate Cr Peter Walker.
“I thank the councillors for their confidence in me as deputy,” Cr Walker said. “It was a bit of a surprise, but a good surprise.”
The positions of mayor and deputy mayor are held for two years in the Goulburn Mulwaree Council, not one year as previously reported.
Discussions of reducing the two-year deputy term to a one-year term was raised by Cr O’Neill.
The motion was not passed and the time frame remained the same.
