Goulburn High head teacher Catherine Baker, who was previously a part of the ‘Breaking the ‘Silence program, decided to bring her past experiences to her school.
“It’s very important that the message is put out by student voices,” Ms Baker said. “Students here are very concerned about violence in general.”
The group meets every Wednesday to plan future activities and fundraisers. There are two boys in the group and Goulburn High teacher and member Dennis Carroll hopes more will join.
“It’s really important for young men to understand this issue,” Mr Carroll said. “This is a problem in our society and we need to talk about it honestly and openly without just appointing blame.”
Student Britney Jeffrey said her participation in the group had opened her eyes. “Establishing this group gives students who have been a victim of family or domestic violence a chance to speak up,” she said.
