The man was driving south, some 13km from Goulburn’s southern exit when he careered off the road and clipped a tree at about 1.30pm, police said. The vehicle skidded for a distance and hit another tree on the side of the road.
The passenger side of his NSW registered Mazda CX 5 took the full impact and luggage and other personal belongings were strewn along the roadside. Skid marks were visible on the road.
Police Rescue freed the man who was conscious and breathing. Police said he suffered internal injuries but the nature of these was not known. Nor was his age and place of abode. He was the car’s sole occupant.
An ambulance crew stabilised the man and transported him some 500 metres north where a NSW Ambulance helicopter landed on the highway. He was transported to Canberra Hospital shortly after 3pm.
One southbound lane of the highway was closed while authorities cleared the scene. Southbound traffic was temporarily diverted along a northbound lane for a short distance while the helicopter was on the ground. It caused cars to be banked up for about 1km.
NSW Rural fire Service’s Parkesbourne brigade also attended. The car was towed from the scene.
