Residents are invited to bring clothing, books and belongings they no longer need and set up a stall for effective re-use.
“People can bring items they no longer need,” youth council mayor Ms Hargan said. “We want to reduce the amount of rubbish you see and unwanted belonging in front of houses.”
“As the youth of Goulburn we see this as a very important issue.”
Mentor and councillor Carol James said the community have to listen to the ideas of the young people as they have a lot to say.
“It’s vital we have a young voice to express opinions and concerns about the city,” Cr James said. “This is a new initiative and something the kids want to do.”
“It started over a conversation about things thrown out. Rather then having it dumped on the side of the road and dumped at the tip, people can swap their goods.”
Residents can organise their own market stalls at Victoria Park between 7am and 3pm.
“We encourage anyone from the community to give us a call. Load your trailer or a box,” she said. “People just need to start planning what to swap or sell.”
The park will also host activities surrounding Clean Up Australia Day, organised by the Goulburn Mulwaree Council, which will include rubbish collection across town.
Cr James also encouraged young people between the ages of 12 to 20 to get involved in the youth council, a group she conceived during her time as mayor.
The next youth meeting will be held at the Recreation Area on Friday and discuss the upcoming youth camp. It will begin at 5.30pm and finish at 7pm. To organise a stall on March 5 for Clean Up Australia Day, call Carol on 0418 342 501.
