He actually won the round after coming from 19th to fourth in the second race, in somewhat controversial circumstances.
It was raining throughout the race and his experience in the wet at Phillip Island helped.
He managed to open up a gap on the main group of riders with the Cube Racing Kawasaki.
Toward the finish got overtaken by Giuseppe Scarcella also riding a Kawasaki ZX6-R.
“I managed to slip underneath him and hang on to win,” Toparis said. “It was a drag race up the hill.”
“ This is awesome I never expected to win.”
Scarcella finished second and Sam Condon third.
Troy Herfoss also showed local dominance on the home track. in race one of the ASBK Superbikes.
He took a gamble on changing to slick tyres rather than wets as the track started to dry and surrendered his pole position on the grid, starting from the back.
The gamble paid off as he opened up a huge gap on the field and near the end after lapping many of the other riders managed to round up Yamaha rider Wayne Maxwell.
“I was not confident of my decision to ride on slicks as there were some wet patches and a couple of showers during the race.
“I did back off a bit after a little kick but it was great to get the win in front of so many local supporters, family and friends.
“Now I am equal with Tommy.”
