The Goulburn Lantern Club was formed in April 1977 by Bernie Thompson, an employee at Goulburn Abattoirs. Bernie had lost some hearing through his war service and had personal experience of how difficult life could be with a hearing disability.
To assist deaf children, Bernie encouraged fellow employees to sell pens on RIDBC Pen Days, and regularly donate a few cents from each pay. From this beginning the Goulburn Lantern Club was formed.
The staff at the abattoirs were enthusiastic and a public meeting was called. Goulburn Mayor, Ernie McDermott, and Bernie Thompson were the first patrons of the club.
RIDBC’s services continue to expand and through its Teleschool program, children all over Australia are now receiving support.
Members and guests will be most welcome to attend the lunch. Please RSVP by April 3 to Rona Hope: 4821 5148.
