The artwork, which pays respect to Caroline Chisholm, is being undertaken by Lake Bathurst based international artist Rudy Kistler.
Mr Kistler is well known for producing 3D chalk art and street art, creating interactive pieces for people to engage with. He is the artist behind ‘the wave’ at the Goulburn Skatepark.
His latest pieced has transformed the dominant wall within the courtyard, creating a colourful celebration of Chisholm and the role she played in the Goulburn community, as well as her lifelong humanitarian work.
“Being an immigrant myself as well as seeing immigration issues regularly in the news, the theme of life and work of Caroline Chisholm seemed to be particularly fitting and timely” said Rudy.
“The imagery is inspired by the volume of writing Caroline engaged in, helping to assure potential British emigrants that there would be a place for them in Australia.
“In the design, Caroline sits in the middle at her desk as the correspondence she’s writing flies off her desk and crashes into the boats coming from Britain. On the right side of the mural I’ve depicted an historical view of the Goulburn landscape complete with grazing merinos.”
Assisting Mr Kistler during the first week of the development of the mural were three local young people; Phoebe Savage, Wren Brown and Chris Boyd, all three of which have worked with Rudy previously on local projects.
The art mural is expected to be completed by the middle of May 2017, weather permitting and is part of Council’s public art program through the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery.
