But Southern Tablelands RFS officer Ian Kennerley said people should not be alarmed.
“There’s a lot of smoke but not much burning,” he said on Sunday morning.
The fire was believed to have broken out from an abandoned campfire on Thursday. Mr Kennerley said people knew about the outbreak but did not report it. Wind carried embers along the riverbank, which then burnt through remote rugged bushland.
The RFS estimated two hectares had burnt but Mr Kennerley said this could be more. A six-member Remote Area Firefighting Team (RAFT) was brought in on Sunday morning and personnel from Windellama RFS also joined the effort.
“It was really isolated so the boys walked in and pumped water from the river,” he said.
“It’s no issue whatsoever...It is in half green bushland.”
The Southern Tablelands RFS also attended a vehicle fire at Mundoonen Rest Area near Yass on Sunday morning.
