This follows a successful grant application to the NSW Government Waste Less Recycle More program.
The successful grant will see $549,630 devoted to implementation of a more regular organic waste collection service, along with an extensive education program.
The council was one of seven projects to take a share of the $2 million program and received the largest chunk of the grant.
Work will start immediately with education aimed at reducing contamination and getting food waste into organic bins, with the new bins to be rolled out progressively.
Fortnightly organic waste collections would then be implemented beginning in 2019, with the service to be provided to all residents in the collection zone at Goulburn and Marulan.
Organic waste bins will also be provided to rural residents as a result of the successful grant.
This grant will enable the council to offer an improved, necessary service to the community.
Fortnightly organic waste collections are something that we have been looking at implementing for some time now, and this grant is a huge boost that will enable us to do this sooner rather than later.
The council will now also be able to provide residents with their own green waste bins, and we will be undertaking extensive education activities aimed at reducing contamination and getting food waste into organic bins – all aimed at reducing waste and being more sustainable in our practices.
The grant was the largest to be awarded under this round of funding, and will also enable the council to provide homes with kitchen caddies for food waste to encourage the community to include this waste in their organic bin.
I would like to extend my gratitude to the Member for Goulburn, the Hon. Pru Goward for her work in making this grant a reality.
We’re looking forward to taking this step into a more sustainable future.
