Plans to hold the Australia Day awards under the trees were changed when a heavy rain fell, so the venue was left in the Pavilion. Deputy Shire Mayor of the ULSC, John Stafford acted as master of ceremonies and invited Alison Cummins to sing the national anthem.
John then introduced Gordon who paid tribute to the indigenous people before he spoke on the spirit of Australia Day, a day that was for all Australians.
Gordon then announced Brian Corby as Citizen for 2018. Brian said we were lucky to have such an outstanding man as our “ambassador”. He was honoured to accept the award on behalf of the community.
The Young Citizen was then named as Emily Croker, a talented hockey player.
The Event of the Year was than announced as the Art Show. Jan Green, accepting the award, said much voluntary work came from the community.
The Rodeo Committee was thrilled to hear the Junior Rodeo announced as the Shire Event of the Year. President, Stewart McLean, said the Junior Rodeo was the school which educated riders for the rodeo. It was necessary to replace riders or there would be no rodeo.
The Gymkhana on Saturday was well attended but a heavy fall of rain made it necessary to postpone the Junior Rodeo until Sunday before the main Rodeo. However the Jamie Aguis concert was able to go ahead.
An auction held during the concert enabled a healthy donation to the RFS. The president, Stewart McLean, expressed the gratitude of the committee to the RFS for the effort made in fighting the fire.
Rick Wilson’s and the horses from Tumut Committee were in top form and Brendon Crawley, riding Opposite Attraction, (74) first, was the only one to ride time in the Bareback. The Saddle Ride saw Ben Maytom have a winning ride on Show Stopper with a score of 83 while R. Wilsons, Rose Tattoo and the Tumut horse, Hell’s Fury, gave Tom Kerr and Josh Barnett equal second places (71).
The bulls from Moruya too were in outstanding form. Josh Birks gave a top ride on Hammer Me for first place (87) with Richard Treanor on Comet second (72) and Zac Maher riding G Force.
