Security Operations Group officers intercepted the 44-year-old male visitor at the jail in a routine search on Sunday, March 18 at about 1pm.
They alleged he had concealed seven grams of a crystal substance, two mobile phones, SIM cards and modified phone chargers in his underwear.
The items were detected when a body scan and a handheld metal detector gave positive readings.
NSW Police officers were contacted and the man was given a future court attendance notice.
“Corrective Services NSW takes a multi-faceted approach to detecting mobile phones in NSW prisons, including sniffer dogs, body scanners and ferromagnetic phone detectors,” said Mark Wilson, the assistant commissioner for security and intelligence.
The Corrective Services NSW Security Operations Group and detection dogs seized 110 mobile phones last year, about two a week on average.
Security Operations Group officers conduct more than 75,200 searches inside prisons annually, in addition to the searches and seizures performed by staff working at individual centres.
“Our officers work tirelessly to find and remove contraband from our prisons, but the small size of the phones and the limited metal content often makes them extremely difficult to detect,” Commissioner Wilson said.
“CSNSW [has] announced the introduction of phone jamming at Goulburn Correctional [Centre].
“This is considered the ultimate solution because it renders all mobile phones in the target area useless.”
The man will attend Goulburn Local Court on May 16.
