Australia’s top cyclists left Goulburn on Sunday morning under perfect racing conditions for the 170km journey up the Hume Hwy finishing in Camden’s CBD as part of the events expansion into a two day race.
After an early but unsuccessful attack eleven riders escaped from the 150 strong field after 14km with the time gap steadily growing to what seemed an irretrievable 5 minutes 40 seconds.
Ultimate team’s classification winners Genesys Wealth Advisers from Tasmania were fortunate to have 2 members of their team in the breakaway group which was caught after the first Razorback climb after Picton, allowing the race to come back together before the final Old Razorback Road assent.
“The race looked like it was over very early when 11 riders got away just out of Goulburn, we had no choice other than chase the leaders down. We couldn’t afford to just let them get away”, Camden stage winner from Team Fly V Jonathan Cantwell said.
Old Razorback Road split the remaining lead group of 50 riders which reformed on Macarthur Bridge with 3 km to go. A fast decent into Camden allowed the stage winner Cantwell to launch a final sprint into the Camden finish in a final stage winning time of 3:54:35 for the 170km.
With the lowest total accumulative time over 2 days of racing (3:59:20) Ben Grenda was declared the overall winner of the 2010 Paradice Investment Management Goulburn to Citi Cycle Classic.
Second place went to Scott Law from team Fly V and third to Rhys Pollock from Drapac Porsche. The winning Team was Genesys Wealth Advisers from Tasmania who’ve had good success over the past three years in this historic race.
“ Everything went to plan with our two nominated riders in the early breakaway, we knew that Ben Grenda has been in good form and could do well over the two days”. Team Manager Andrew Christie-Johnston said.
The King of the Mountain category was won by Cameron Peterson from Virgin Blue RBS Morgans with Alexander of team Bike Bug winning the Sprinters jersey.
“Today’s event has been an outstanding success and I’m pleased that the NSW State Government has again partnered the Macarthur Collegians Cycling Club through the support of the State Member for Camden Geoff Corrigan”, event Ambassador Simon Poidevin said.
