Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Blue Mountains were on the back foot early after Goulburn quick Mik Webber tore through their top order, claiming three wickets to set his side up for the monumental victory.
Webber finished with figures of 4-12 and along with Josh Pender (3-4) did the majority of the damage with the ball in restricting the Blue Mountains to a total of 92. In reply Goulburn hit trouble early too, thanks to Blue Mountains quick James Heath.
Heath took two quick wickets to have the competition’s number one seeds reeling at 2- 14. However a game-saving knock of 56 not out from Ben Staples got Goulburn home at 3- 93.
Goulburn captain Dane Stevenson said his side worked well as a unit for their entire Country Plate campaign. “As I said yesterday it was the commitment to the plans and the things we wanted to achieve from cricket (that got us the win),” Stevenson said.
“Obviously the first thing, having the 14 blokes together and turning up to try and win a game and, like I said, everyone has played their part, dug deep and contributed when they need to.
“I can’t really single it out to any individuals. It’s a team game and everyone has done their part.” Stevenson believes his side began the match well, which set the tone for the duration.
“We were quite lucky I think. We lost the toss and got to bowl and we were going to bowl anyway,” he said.
“I thought it was a bit wet on top, which it was, and Mik (Webber) and Brad (Smith) started us off really well, as they always do, with a few early breakthroughs to put them on the back foot and we drove it home from there.”
