Benn mixed with young people from Goulburn and surrounding regions and took questions from the floor at the event’s closing ceremony: how much do you have to practice? How much can you bench press? “Lots,” was the answer.
And Benn’s hard at it now in the lead up to London in July. He’s currently training in Melbourne, but spends up to eight months of the year in Germany training with his coach.
His sights are firmly set on Olympic gold for Australia and he won’t be forgetting his Aboriginal roots either when he’s there. Being a role model and mentor to young Indigenous people is important to Benn. It’s his way of giving something back and learning from young people too.
At the Vibe 3on3 he was in his element, inspiring with his stories and undoubtedly his achievement as an Australian champion. Benn joined a host of other role models – local and national – in what has been described as one of the most successful Vibe 3on3 yet.
Executive producer Gavin Jones said it was important to bring the youth event back to Goulburn for a second year as the event had a positive impact on youth in 2010.
“Almost every school in Goulburn attended, as well as schools from Yass, Queanbeyan, Braidwood, Southern Highlands and Crookwell,” he said.
“I think every student and every teacher walked away from the event with an overwhelming sense of pride in Goulburn and knowledge about the Aboriginal community of the region and the health services which cater to the needs of all our young people.
“Most importantly, everyone got to experience a positive, fun, action-packed day that got them playing, dancing, singing, and laughing together. I couldn’t have asked for a more engaging day, so thank you to our local organising committee, you’re awesome and very deadly,” Mr Jones said.
The Vibe 3on3 was held at the Goulburn Basketball Stadium and aims to promote healthy lifestyles, strengthen communities and boost self-esteem. For more information go to www.vibe.com.au.
