FIVE Goulburn teenagers have teamed up to create their own fundraising mission after being inspired by some local charity work.
Previous Mulwaree High School students Dean McIntosh, Kurt Warn, Josh Pender, Pat Smith and Lucas Levien had the idea of holding their own ‘Movember Mission’ after attending a recent charity racing event.
“I saw the charity work at the races on the weekend and thought it would be great if I started something like that, so Kurt and I decided to make the ‘Movember Mission’,” Dean said.
Traditionally, Movember takes place in the month of November, during which time men grow moustaches and take donations in support of the Movember Foundation.
The Foundation supports awareness of men’s health, particularly prostate cancer and depression. The ‘Movember Mission’ is a unique way of raising money for the same cause, invented by Dean and Kurt. Rather than growing moustaches, the guys have agreed that for every $10 they raise, they will each walk a kilometre between December 3 to 6.
“We want to raise at least $2000 so we can walk from Sydney to Goulburn,” Dean said, adding that Newcastle would probably be their cut off point.
The group is doing a combination of things to raise money including opening a donation page on the Movember website, and asking locals to make a contribution.
“We’re thinking about going around to charitable businesses and asking if they want to donate, as well as anyone else,” Kurt said.
Readers wishing to donate can do so by visiting au.movember.com, clicking the donate button and finding their group name ‘Movember Missionaries’ or follow their mission on Facebook at facebook. com/event.php?eid=17984 5885437114.
