In the past 11 days, officers have handed out 544 speeding fines and more than 180 other infringement notices, including 29 relating to restraints. They have also conducted more than 1800 breath tests.
The actions are part of a state wide proactive policing initiative, Operation Safe Arrival, which aims to maintain law and order on our roads during the Christmas and New Year rush.
A 22-year-old Goulburn man will appear in Moss Vale on January 22 facing a string of traffic offences after allegedly exceeding the speed limit on the Hume Highway by 65km/h on Monday afternoon.
Highway Patrol stopped the vehicle after it was allegedly detected travelling at 175km/h in a 110km/h speed zone near Mittagong at 1.30pm.
When asked for his licence, police claim the driver produced a suspended P1 licence. The driver was charged with driving in a dangerous manner; driving whilst suspended and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.
On Sunday morning, a 37-year-old had his driving privileges in NSW suspended for six months after being detected speeding on the Hume Highway near Goulburn.
The driver was travelling at 162km/h in a 110km/h zone and when officers pulled him over they discovered a nine-month-old baby boy was unrestrained in the back seat.
The driver was issued a ticket for exceeding the speed limit over 45km/h and driving with an unrestrained child in the vehicle. He was also banned from driving in NSW for the next six months.
On the same day, a 19-year-old South Australia woman was arrested after she was detected travelling at 198km/h on the Hume Highway near Yass.
She was charged with driving at a speed dangerous, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and had her licence confiscated and her driving privileges in NSW suspended.
At 9.36pm, a 20-year-old Melbourne man was booked on the Hume Highway near Goulburn for exceeding the speed limit by 40km/h. When police pulled the driver over they discovered he had three unrestrained passengers. He was issued with an infringement notice.
Double demerits ended last night but police said they would continue to enforce traffic laws.
