First look at Kutcher as Jobs

Ashton or acting? ... JOBS
Ashton or acting? ... JOBS

Ahead of the film's first showing at the festival, the distributors have released a clip from the film, featuring Ashton Kutcher as Jobs, a role which has until now been judged entirely on comparative photos.

The thing is, if you approached this clip, the first footage we've seen from JOBS, WITHOUT knowing it was meant to be Steve Jobs, you could be forgiven for thinking is was a video of Kutcher (or possibly his Two and a Half Men character Walden) harassing some guy in a present day car park?

It doesn't help that their authentic - and I'm sure time-consumingly researched - costuming looks a lot like it could be worn confidently in today's hipster-informed universe. The same goes for the, and I use this term loosely, hair cuts.

Sure, they're talking about the first Apple OS, and to the finely tuned technical ear, the terms are dated, but it isn't until the final, admittedly well scripted, dialogue below that the penny truly drops:

Steve Wozniak: You're over reacting. Even if you were developing this for freaks like us, and I doubt you are. Nobody wants to buy a computer. Nobody!

Steve Jobs: How does somebody know what they want if they've never even seen it?"

Then again, it could be argued in the age of tablets, nobody does want a computer!

Perhaps he's hoping to play a wookiee in J.J. Abrams new project?

Come Monday the reviews will be in, and we'll know if the performance is more Kutcher than Jobs or if Ashton will have made the leap to genuine character actor.

JOBS releases in Australia on June 13.
