With the culmination of school swimming carnivals and selection honours for many members, a number of swimmers have also attended representative meets on top of contesting end-of-season club nights and championships, held at the Goulburn Aquatic Centre.
Following their representative honours at the 2013 NSW State Age Championships in January, James Greenlees and Jake Cooper set their sights on competing at the NSW Country Championships on March 23. The Championships were once again held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
Jake, 12, competed in the 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle, touching the wall in all three events with personal best times.
Jake’s times continue to fall. He clocked 29.59 seconds for his 50m freestyle and 1:26.68 seconds for 100m breaststroke, with commendable placings of 13th and 11th respectively.
James, 15, contested the freestyle and breaststroke events in both the 50m and 100m distances, swimming consistent times and achieving a personal of 58.93 seconds in the 100m freestyle.
Once again the level of competition from older swimmers posed an immense challenge for James.
The winner of the 100m freestyle event was London Olympian, David McKeon, a 22-year-old, in a time of 51.09, thus setting the bar high for up-and-coming swimmers such as James.
A relay team of Lachlan Norberg (backstroke), Alexander Adameitis (butterfly), Jack McCarthy (freestyle) and Jake Cooper (breaststroke), which qualified at the ACT Relay Championships in February, contested the men’s 12-years-andunder 200m medley relay, touching the wall in 10th place with a PB of 2:37.07 seconds.
All five GASC swimmers were presented with specially coloured maroon club swimming caps prior to the meet to recognise their achievements in reaching competition at the NSW country level.
Only a week later James and Jake, along with Lachlan, Madeleine Vu, Chantelle Vu and Shaun Vu, attended the ACT Championships, together with a small contingent of GASC swimmers participating in the development and intermediate events.
Having an outstanding meet, Jake finished the weekend with an impressive medal tally of seven from seven events, five of which were championship finals, including gold in the 100m breaststroke, silver in the 200m breaststroke, and three bronze medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events.
A further gold in the 100m backstroke intermediate final and silver in the 50m backstroke intermediate final made up his medal haul, while also achieving PBs in the 100m and 200m breaststroke and 100m backstroke events.
James, once again contesting the highly competitive 15-yearsand- over division, competed in a staggering 10 championship events over the two days. He touched the wall in bronze medal position in the 100m and 200m freestyle events, once again achieving a PB of 58.94 seconds in the 100m.
James finished just outside medal contention in 50m butterfly, 200m backstroke, and 50m freestyle, while finishing in the top five in the 100m butterfly and top 10 in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, along with the 100m backstroke championship finals.
Both boys demonstrated their fitness and stamina after having finished first in their age divisions in the 800m freestyle event at GASC club championships on the Friday night prior to the ACT meet. They also competed in up to 11 events at the Catholic School Archdiocesan Swimming Carnival in Yass that same day. Lachlan Norberg (12-years-old), Madeleine Vu (13) and Shaun Vu (14), all contested the 50m freestyle. They touched the wall in 12th, 15th and 12th respectively, producing consistent times but not able to walk away with a medal on the day or produce a PB.
Chantelle Vu (16) qualified for the 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle championship events, but also finished outside medal contention in the older division.
Other club swimmers to attend the ACT Championships over the weekend included Alexander Adameitis (third 100m freestyle), Tyler Dunbar, Ava Gilbert, Lachlan Gilbert (first 50m backstroke, second 50m freestyle, third 100m freestyle), Lachlan Norberg (first 100m breaststroke, first 100m freestyle, third 50m butterfly, first 50m breaststroke, first 100m butterfly, second 100m backstroke), Hannah Phelps (third 50m backstroke, second 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley), Hayden Shawyer (third 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly, and first 50m breaststroke), Madeleine Vu (first 100m breaststroke), and Shaun Vu (first 100m breaststroke).
The following weekend Jake, Lachlan and Sophia Adameitis returned to SOPAC for the finals of the Speedo Sprints for swimmers aged 13 years and under. They were members of the 93 strong ACT team.
Sophia, at her first representative meet at the age of 9, competed in the 50m sprint events of each stroke, achieving PBs in both the butterfly and freestyle sprints.
Lachlan, also attending his first meet as a member of the ACT team, competed in the 50m butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke sprints, achieving PBs in the latter two events.
Jake contested the sprint events in all four strokes, achieving PBs in butterfly, freestyle and breaststroke, and as the anchor swimmer for the boys 13 years & under medley relay and freestyle relay teams.
To cap off the season Jake and James were chosen to represent the ACT in the James Brophy Inter-District Invitational Meet on March 24 at the AIS.
Selection in the Brophy team is based on recorded 50m times achieved from September to February and includes swimmers from 8-16 years.
Jake contested the 50m freestyle event, touching the wall in third place, gaining a PB in the 50m backstroke and narrowly missing out on a second PB in the 50m breaststroke.
He also swam in the medley relay and the boys open 8x50m freestyle relay.
James was selected for the 50m freestyle, finishing in first place at this meet, and narrowly missing out on a placing in both the 50m breaststroke and backstroke events.
James also swam in the mixed 16-years-and-over medley relay and freestyle relay, also finishing in first place.
