2014 also marks the centenary of the Red Cross, which first started operations at the outbreak of World War 1. The Rose Festival will be paying tribute to the organisation through their floral displays, including a floral Red Cross, according to Rose Festival Committee member Christine Marr.
The committee has chosen to make the display the feature of the Festival to celebrate 100 years of the Red Cross in Australia.
“Goulburn may well have been the first branch formed in 1914 and there will be many pieces of memorabilia displayed at the Festival,” she said.
“If your family has, over the years, had connections with the local branches of the Red Cross there may well be something to stir a memory for you in minute books, photographs and badges. But certainly do come and participate or just come along and enjoy the display of beautiful blooms.
Picking will be taking place at Victoria Park this Thursday at 8am. If you would like to come and help, we will all then be sharing in a delicious morning tea. Funds raised from the Festival are used to continually improve our beautiful local public gardens.”
The festival will be officially opened on Saturday at 11.30 am by Executive Director of the NSW Red Cross, Annie Harvey, along with Judy Harper, Manager of NSW Red Cross and Marianne Ronayne, President of the Goulburn Red Cross.
Prize money of up to $1,500 will be up for grabs along with an art exhibition held in the Belmore Room of the Soldiers Club by the Goulburn and District Art Society.
“Remember that Mother’s Day is coming up soon, so this exhibition will be a great opportunity to purchase gifts that will decorate your home, office or shop,” Goulburn and District Art Society Publicity Officer, Alex Mortensen said.
“All art is by members of the GDAS, with all artworks for sale at reasonable prices, and entry is free.
The Goulburn Spinners and Weaver’s Society will also be holding their bi-annual exhibition entitled ‘Busy Hands’ in the Merino and Market Rooms in the Goulburn Soldiers Club across the whole weekend.
