A 32-year-old female tourist has died as the result of a two-vehicle crash west of Port Latta yesterday.
The woman's 30-year-old husband has undergone surgery for multiple injuries and is in a serious condition.
At 11.25am yesterday, Smithton Police were called to the head-on collision between two vehicles on the Bass Highway west of Port Latta.
A white Hyundai delivery van, driven by a 31-year-old Burnie man, was travelling west and collided with an east bound silver Volkswagon hatch.
The hatch was driven by the 30-year-old male and his wife was the sole female passenger. Both are Chinese Nationals, who were touring Tasmania.
After the collision the vehicles came to rest down an embankment. The driver of the Volkswagon was trapped in the vehicle and was freed by members of Circular Head SES (Road Rescue Team).
The occupants of both vehicles were taken to the North West Regional Hospital Burnie.
the female passenger passed away at approximately 4.30pm.
The occupant of the Hyundai has suffered minor injuries and was later released.
Members of the Chinese Consulate are assisting with notification to next of kin and names will not be released at this stage.
Any witnesses to this accident or who may have observed either vehicle prior to the are urged to contact police.
The crash comes after another fatal accident in the same area less than two weeks ago.
Police stated this is a tragic start to the Easter period and with Operation Cross Roads now underway drivers are urged to obey road rules, remain vigilant when driving and take frequent rest periods if on long journeys.
Motorists can expect increased police activity on our roads over the Easter period with speeding, inattention along with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs being the focus of police activities.
