This was a game the boys had circled in the draw as soon as it came out, and it was a chance to see just how far they’d come with a full pre season behind them.
It only took the Stags 10 minutes to take the lead.
The Goulburn boys pressed Yerinbool’s passing game from the kick off and continually forced errors.
One such error saw Stags captain Aaron Swanson pounced on a lose pass and beat a player before getting to the by-line and a sublime pass and found strike partner Jason Broadbent in the middle before he calmly put it passed the keeper. He not only opened the scoring but he did so for last year’s division 2 players account for the season.
Stags had the better of the play leading up to half time but couldn’t carve out a clear cut chances.
The mode was somewhat soured when Stag’s Scott Damini, who was dominating in the middle succumbed to a knee injury in only his second game back form a similar injury two seasons ago.
Stags headed to the sheds 1-0 up.
The second half started much the same, with Stags having the better of it.
They got a deserved second after a smart short corner and some clever running and passing from Jason Broadbent and Ben Stevenson, who gave Edan Wheeldon, who had been flat in the first half, some space in the box to finish smartly.
His goal giving the Stags some breathing space while sending the spectators into rapture.
The game then opened up with Yerrinbool trying to get back into it but once again the Stags defence was up to the task with a mixture of great defence, coolness of a cucumber and some good goal keeping all be it with a little help from the post.
Stags capped off another fine second half display and grabbed a deserved third goal after a powerful shot from Aaron Swanson could only be parried into the path of Jason Broadbent who slotted home his second and guaranteed stags the three points.
Actew AGL man of the match went to Edan Wheelden who dominated the middle of the park.
This capped of a tremendous day for the senior men’s with Division 2 sides Stags 97 winning at Crookwell and AC Stags defeating Workers both 2-1.
Next week the Stags travel to Moss Vale where they hope to continue their winning form. The Sunday after they’re back for a mouth watering clash against Marulan FC in the STFA knock-out cup.
