The nation’s first inland city features in the upcoming episode of popular SBS program Who Do You Think You Are?
The episode tracks two-time Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver’s mission to undercover the truth behind a family secret long buried in shame.
That journey takes the famed Australian actor on an unexpected trek to Goulburn – once home to Weaver’s grandmother, Grace.
Discovering the life of a previously unknown grandmother is inspiring, Weaver says.
“(Grace), she’s suddenly got a personality for me; she hasn’t ever had one for me before,” the star of 2012 Oscar-winning film Silver Linings Playbook explains.
“I think it’s always good to be enlightened about the truth.”
Goulburn librarian Lynn Bonomini and local historians Gordon Thompson and Monica Croak were filmed by the show’s crew during a research visit. So too was much of the St Clair Museum in Sloane Street.
Goulburn Historical Society president Garry White says he’s had to keep SBS program’s visit under wraps for more than a year.
He looks forward to watching the show and finally being about to gloat about Goulburn’s involvement.
“It’s got to be 12 months or so since they’ve done the filming,” Mr White said.
“They (SBS) wanted to keep it a bit hush-hush until it came out. They didn’t even want us to say who the episode was about for a long while.
“It’s a bit of a feather in our cap. A lot of the research was done via the Crookwell and Goulburn Historical Societies.”
So just how important was the city of Goulburn and its people on the life of Jacki Weaver?
All will be revealed on SBS 1 at 7.30pm, tomorrow.
