AMY Day and Brad Hewitt made sure the locals came away with spoils, but it was a Carnival dominated by the girls, with six of the eight races driven to victory by females yesterday.

Novocastrian Lauren Panella drove home the New Zealand born gelding Easy on the Eye to make sure her and trainer Shane Tritton took out the $30,000 Frank and Edna Day Cup (2240m).
She drove victoriously three times to make sure harness racing’s glamour couple ended the day successfully, taking the Divalls Earthmoving and Bulk Haulage (1710m) and the Goulburn First National Three (2240m) along with the feature race.
Local trainer Amy Day snagged a double win in the ARW Multigroup (1710) with Audrey Maree and the Glenferrie Farm (1710m) with Ponderena.
She was unlucky not to beat fellow female trainer Amanda Turnbull in the Goulburn Party Hire (1710m), after Turnbull’s Last Man Out pipped Ten in Command on the finishing line.
“Me and Amanda are pretty good mates,” Miss Day said.
“She’s one of the leading female drivers so we probably clash a fair bit in regard to how we go in our races and we’re both pretty competitive.”
“It’s only just recently that the female racers have made a statement I think.
“There’s a lot of females out there who are actually doing very well in what is mostly a male dominated sport.”
Turnbull also finished second in the day’s main event with Heza Thrill.
Goulburn trainer Brad Hewitt took out the second feature race of the day, the Goulburn Soldier Club Goulburn Rose (2240m) with I’m Jay Tee.
The horse is partly owned by Canberra Raiders captain Jarrod Croker.
Joe Rando took out the Goulburn Mulwaree City Sprint race 8.
Goulburn Harness racing club secretary Mark Croatto said despite the bad weather, it was heartening to see a good amount of punters take to the carnival.
“It was sensational and the inside was chock-a-block,” he said.
“The crowd really built up between races four and six which sort of coincided with the things at Victoria Park so it really swelled.”
