The group is encouraging families and walking groups to visit the West Goulburn Bushland this Sunday, September 13 as part of Bushcare’s Major Day Out.
West Goulburn Bushland Reserve president Bob Kirk said while restoration work in the bushland area is still underway, but there are some nice views over Goulburn to be had from this area as well as some pleasant bush walks.
Mr Kirk said a team from Absolute Fitness would be working with the volunteers to map a short 1.8km walk and accompanying routine - as an introductory exercise program for those looking to get into shape for summer.
He said the West Goulburn Bushland Volunteers would have “real billy tea “on offer in the Mary Street carpark from 9:30am until 12 noon.
“The volunteers want to hear suggestions from the public on how to improve the facilities in the bush, particularly the cleared central area of the bushland,” Cr Kirk said.
“We have been working up there for about 18 months now, cleaning it up, removing dumped rubbish and foreign vegetation and there is perimeter fencing now to keep vehicles out.
“There is wildlife up there, including swamp wallabies, kangaroos and abundant birdlife.
“We want people to come up and enjoy the area. There are a large number of tracks people can explore for themselves.”
Bushcare’s Major Day Out is a national day of community participation to restore remnant bushland.
The event enables new volunteers to increase their knowledge about their local area and make a difference under the guidance of professionals and more experienced volunteers.
Sydney resident Don Wilson founded Bushcare’s Major Day Out to create greater awareness of bushcare and the threats to Australian bushland in urban and semi-urban areas.
Volunteers take part in a range of activities unique to each site including tree planting, weed removal, bushwalks and morning teas/barbecues.
