The project will include a four storey convention centre, 96 serviced apartments, and 17 residential villas, which were recommended for approval in a council meeting in December last year.
Mr Daoud indicated at the time that stage one of the project would take some six months, however he told the Post that administration work that has had to be carried out on the proposal has taken longer than envisaged.
“Construction is very close to becoming a reality,” he said.
“We have had to work on the conservation plan which we finally completed a couple of months ago, and we have also had to implement the subdivision plans with Goulburn Mulwaree Council, too. This paperwork has certainly taken up a lot of my time.
“My hope is that demolition of the 11 buildings will be carried out first and then the construction of the villas in January 2016.”
Mr Daoud partnered with Goulburn First National principal Barry McEntee and his team to handle the marketing of the residential villas, with Mayor Geoff Kettle agreeing he would buy one back in February of this year.
Eleven buildings currently on the site will be demolished, including a former study hall, the ‘Mother Gabriel wing’, the science block, former Sisters of Mercy accommodation and the EC Manfred designed St John’s Wing.
Part of the brick fence lining the property on the Bourke St side will be demolished, along with a section on Clinton St, however the section surrounding the Our Lady of Mercy Chapel and the administration building (a former convent) will be preserved.
The heritage listed Our Lady of Mercy chapel and the administration building adjacent to it will also be restored. Extensive landscaping is also proposed across the site.
