Crews went to work on Sunday removing the liquidambar from the corner of Goldsmith, outside the former Bank of NSW.
Councillors unanimously endorsed the move at their most recent meeting, without discussion.
Operations director Matt O’Rourke said the removal was necessary for the CBD’s upgrade, scheduled to start in the block later this month. It was also a matter of safety.
In a report he said the tree roots had caused extensive damage to the asphalt footpath.
“It (the path) is hazardous for pedestrians and requires substantial rectification work,” he stated.
‘A characteristic of liquidambar trees is their vigorous root system. This tree has been planted against the kerb with its root system growing in an eccentric rather than radial manner. There is evidence the roots are extending across the footpath towards the nearby buildings.”
The new paving requires a 20cm excavation, meaning further damage to the root, and possible eventual removal.
The council has removed several trees from Auburn St as part of the CBD upgrade and in the interests of more “suitable” species.
However it is also also replacing them with ornamental pears.
